Purchasing mattresses and beds used to be a tedious process of trial and error. First, one had to find the time to visit a physical store, and then spend hours laying, pressing, and bouncing on various kinds for feel, comfort, support, and everything else that could provide a fantastic night’s sleep. Sadly, as I am sure many of us have experienced, even those steps are not guarantees, because no amount of short-term testing can adequately replicate the lives we live on our beds. Apart from spending a third of our days in that area, there is also the matter of sharing beds with our spouses, children, and pets; there is sleeping, but also playing, cradling, reading, mothers feeding, and so on.

For many decades, the really excellent mattresses cost an arm and a leg for the technologies used in their design. If you did not have the funds for it, you’re stuck with your run-of-the-mill mattress which eventually made you toss and turn at night or gave you back pains. I know, because this was my problem, and before the era of “everything is on the internet,” there just weren’t that many options. Given what was available, I did not have anyone to vouch for every brand’s quality .

Now, the game has completely changed with the introduction of luxury beds-in-boxes, available online and delivered right to your doorstep. One such company that has risen in popularity is the DreamCloud Mattress, and if the name doesn’t entice you, allow me to break it down.

DreamCloud Mattress DreamCloud Girl

DreamCloud has been around for some decades, but their 2019 product really caught my attention. It’s a hybrid that combines memory technology, foam, and coils — all the things which make luxury beds — but at a reasonable budget, vacuum-packed into a box and shipped straight to your homes.

Components

The DreamCloud is a 15-inch, 2-toned mattress with 5 layers. Each layer serves a particular purpose, so I will get into detail below.

Cover

The whole mattress is covered in a blend of cashmere and polyester, giving it a plush and luxurious feel. It’s soft, breathable, and quilted with memory material. This makes it a EuroTop, a more seamless sort of pillow-top that provides a cleaner look; but also functions to prevent shifting or losing its original shape like a conventional pillow top. The memory filling is quite compact, which makes it more durable than its obsolete counterpart. This outer top layer constitutes 1.5 inches of the composition.

Memory Gel

The 2nd layer is a gel-infused memory foam which allows body contouring and provides pressure relief. This constitutes another 1.5 inches of the mattress.

Body contouring gives the sensation of “sinking” into the mattress, which I’ve mostly associated with 5-star hotel beds. The gel swirl dissipates heat, which helps in keeping cool on the bed. For those who, like me, often sleep hot in the course of the night, this is vital. The combination of the ventilated cover along with the cooling gel makes a huge difference, and I don’t wake up sweaty before the crack of dawn. DreamCloud Girl

Poly Foam

The layer underneath the gel foam is a slightly firmer foam, providing body and support to the mattress. This is especially important for heavier individuals, to keep from sinking completely into the bed. The moderate firmness of the bed is attributable to this poly foam, counteracting sagging, which commonly causes body pains. This 2.5-inch layer also serves as a separator for the coils beneath.

Pocketed Coils

Under the high-density foam are individually wrapped coils. These modern versions of springs equip the mattress with mobility, allowing sleepers to change positions with ease and not feel “stuck.” Their unique pockets make it so they can move independently, reducing motion transfer, which is a consideration for people who share beds. In the same vein, the coils are braced round the borders, strengthening the perimeter of this bed and maximizing the entire space without collapsing. The coils make up more than half of the bed’s makeup at 8 inches.

Base Foam

At the very base of the mattress is 1.5 inches of firm foam. This serves to cushion the coils and act as the base.

Ratings by Feature DreamCloud Girl

Now that we know what is in a DreamCloud, let us see how all its components combine in a number of the features we look for in a bed. Everyone will have a different experience when it comes to talks on firmness, freedom, pressure relief, edge support, and movement transfer, since these features are determined by the person’s body weight, build, and sleeping preferences. To help understand my personal evaluations, please be aware that I weigh about 120 pounds, and am a combination back and side sleeper, often favoring the latter.

Firmness — 5 out of 5

I start with this because I have lower back problems, which have been mostly caused by my previous bed of more than 1 decade. I didn’t take the time to observe that the bed had sagged considerably from the center section, and I was sleeping with poor skeletal support.

The DreamCloud has medium firmness, which gives me the adequate balance of comfort and support that I’m looking for. It’s firm enough to make certain that my spine is not compromised, and factoring in its Eurotop cover, gives me a nice “sinking into the bed” feel that I love.

I reiterate that if you’re larger and heavier than I am, it’s possible that the DreamCloud may feel softer, as your body sinks more significantly into the mattress.

Mobility — 5 out of 5

Among my sleeping habits is also repositioning a lot through the night. I am a combination sleeper and switch between back and side sleeping. I’ve had beds which were too soft and static that made it feel like drowning when I tried to move slightly. On the DreamCloud, this wasn’t a problem, and I could reposition easily, aided by a gentle bounce.

Stress Relief — 4 out of 5 DreamCloud Girl

Different body parts exert different amounts of pressure once we lay in bed. Hips and shoulders have more contact with the mattress, particularly for side sleepers. Being a hybrid mattress, the Eurotop and memory materials allow some sinkage into its foam layers, and consequently alleviate more pressure in comparison to firmer alternatives. When sleeping on my back, I feel an even distribution of my weight, and the coils provide the support for my lower back. When I am on my side, it’s comfortable enough for my shoulders and hips to snuggle into the mattress whilst keeping my spine aligned. I do not sleep on my stomach much, but I felt like I sank too much when I tried it; so it may be the reverse in a sense that there wasn’t any pressure to the point of sinkage. That, or I am simply not used to this position.

Edge Support — 4 out of 5

Should you make full use of every inch of your mattress, you would want to do it without falling off its borders. I found the DreamCloud’s stability to be quite good, but also noted that it was better when lying down rather than when sitting on the edge, which may be attributed to the more even distribution of my weight when spread across a larger area than in 1 spot.

Motion Transfer — 5 out of 5

Having coils, I was somewhat worried that my dog and I’d be bouncing around the bed at every move we each made during our sleep, disturbing the other. I was impressed by how well the top layers cushioned and muffled our movements, even when my dog jumped on the bed while I was on it. My dog is a medium and weighs about 30 kg, so I’m not sure how this would translate to sharing a bed with another adult human, but I’m pretty happy about this for my own needs.

Final Remarks and FAQ DreamCloud Girl

It is utterly important to choose the right bed to make sure you’ll be safe from back pains and get good quality sleep. If you want to live a long and healthy life, sleep has got to be a priority. You’ve just read my reviews on each of the features of DreamCloud, and I’d say that all in all, it is definitely a reliable brand.

That sums up my experience with my 1st ever hybrid bed-in-a-box. Here are some FAQs for those of you with particular concerns.

Who’d enjoy the DreamCloud?

I’m so satisfied with it, but like I specified: I mostly sleep on my side and back, and wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers. People who often sleep hot will also enjoy the gel-infused memory foam. For those persons who are fond of the luxury feel of excellent hotel beds, this is a fantastic alternative for its plush Eurotop and memory materials that give the sensation of being cradled in clouds. Back support is wonderful, and I have not had any pains to report.

How do I install the DreamCloud?

It’ll be delivered in a box, and is quite heavy; so unless you are extremely strong, you will need some assistance. If you’ll be using a bed frame or base, place the vacuum-sealed mattress on it before you tear it open. You will not require box springs, but this fits most standard sizes; additionally, this can be used on any flat surface (even the flooring ). Due to the coils, be ready for some snap when it escapes its own container. Allow up to 48 hours for it to completely reshape and adapt to its new area. That’s it!

What’s the price range?

Based upon the size, they range from $799 for a Twin up to $1,499 for a King or California King. If you are not in any rush, you may want to wait for a discount, which they provide quite frequently on their site.

Is it a great investment? DreamCloud Girl

For me, it was definitely leaps and bounds better than my age-old mattress. I estimate I’d have at least a decade with this one, so that counts as a good investment in my book. Besides, for the luxurious sleep it’s provided me in the past couple of weeks, it has been more than worth the cost.
