Dreamcloud-Review

Purchasing beds and mattresses used to be a tedious process of trial and error. First, one had to find the time to visit a physical store, and then spend hours laying, pressing, and bouncing on various kinds for feel, comfort, support, and everything else which could offer a fantastic night’s sleep. Sadly, as I am sure many of us have experienced, even those steps aren’t guarantees, because no amount of short-term testing can satisfactorily replicate the lives we live on our beds. Aside from spending a third of our days in that space, there is also the matter of sharing beds with our partners, kids, and pets; there is sleeping, but also playing, cradling, reading, moms feeding, etc.

For many years, the really good mattresses cost an arm and a leg for the technologies used in their design. If you did not have the budget for it, you’re stuck with your run-of-the-mill mattress that eventually made you toss and turn at night or gave back pains. I know, since this was my issue, and before the era of “it’s all on the world wide web,” there just were not that many options. Given what was available, I did not have anyone to vouch for each brand’s quality either.

Now, the game has completely changed with the introduction of luxury beds-in-boxes, available online and delivered directly to your doorstep. One such company that has risen in popularity is the DreamCloud Mattress, and if the name doesn’t entice you, allow me to break it down.

DreamCloud Mattress Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

DreamCloud has existed for some decades, but their 2019 product is what caught my attention. It’s a hybrid that combines memory technology, foam, and coils — all of the things which make luxury beds — but at an affordable budget, vacuum-packed into a box and sent straight to your houses.

Components

The DreamCloud is a 15-inch, 2-toned mattress with 5 layers. Each layer serves a specific purpose, so I will get into detail below.

Cover

The whole mattress is covered in a blend of cashmere and polyester, giving it a plush and luxurious feel. It is soft, breathable, and quilted with memory material. This makes it a EuroTop, a more seamless type of pillow-top that provides a cleaner look; but also serves to prevent shifting or changing its original shape like a conventional pillow top. The memory filling is quite compact, which makes it more durable than its dated counterpart. This outer top layer constitutes 1.5 inches of the composition.

Memory Gel

The 2nd layer is a gel-infused memory foam that allows body contouring and provides pressure relief. This makes up another 1.5 inches of the mattress.

Body contouring gives the feeling of “sinking” into the bed, which I have mostly associated with 5-star hotel beds. The gel swirl dissipates heat, which really helps in keeping cool on the bed. For those who, like me, often sleep hot in the course of the night, this is vital. The combination of the ventilated cover and the cooling gel makes a massive difference, and I don’t wake up sweaty before the crack of dawn. Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

Poly Foam

The layer underneath the gel foam is a slightly firmer foam, providing body and support to the mattress. This is especially important for heavier people, to keep from sinking entirely into the bed. The medium firmness of the bed is attributable to the poly foam, counteracting sagging, which commonly leads to body pains. This 2.5-inch layer also acts as a separator for the coils beneath.

Pocketed Coils

Under the high-density foam are individually wrapped coils. These modern versions of springs equip the mattress with mobility, allowing sleepers to shift positions without difficulty and not feel “stuck.” Their individual pockets make it so they can react independently, reducing movement transfer, which is a consideration for those who share beds. In exactly the same vein, the coils are braced around the borders, strengthening the perimeter of this bed and maximizing the whole space without collapsing. The coils make up more than half of the bed’s makeup at 8 inches.

Base Foam

At the very bottom of this mattress is 1.5 inches of firm foam. This serves to cushion the coils and act as the foundation.

Ratings by Feature Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

Now that we know what is in a DreamCloud, let’s see how all its components combine in a number of the features we look for in a bed. Everyone will have a different experience when it comes to discussions on stability, freedom, pressure relief, edge support, and movement transfer, because these features are determined by the individual’s body weight, build, and sleeping preferences. To help understand my personal ratings, please note that I weigh roughly 120 lbs, and am a combination back and side sleeper, often favoring the latter.

Firmness — 5 out of 5

I start with this because I have lower back problems, which were largely due to my previous bed of more than 1 decade. I didn’t take the time to notice that the bed had sagged considerably from the middle section, and I had been sleeping with poor skeletal support.

The DreamCloud has medium firmness, which gives me the adequate balance of support and comfort that I’m looking for. It’s firm enough to ensure that my spine is not compromised, and factoring in its Eurotop cover, gives me a nice “sinking into the bed” feel that I adore.

I reiterate that if you’re bigger and heavier than I am, it is possible that the DreamCloud may feel softer, as your body sinks more significantly into the mattress.

Mobility — 5 out of 5

Among my sleeping habits is also shifting a lot through the night. I’m a combination sleeper and change between back and side sleeping. I’ve had beds which were too soft and static that made it feel like drowning when I tried to move slightly. On the DreamCloud, this was not a problem, and I could reposition easily, aided by a gentle bounce.

Stress Relief — 4 out of 5 Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

Different body parts exert various amounts of pressure once we lay in bed. Hips and shoulders have more contact with the mattress, particularly for side sleepers. Being a hybrid mattress, the Eurotop and memory materials allow some sinkage into its foam layers, and consequently alleviate more pressure compared to firmer alternatives. When sleeping on my back, I feel an even distribution of my weight, and the coils provide the support for my lower back. When I am on my side, it is comfortable enough for my shoulders and hips to snuggle in the mattress whilst keeping my spine aligned. I do not sleep on my stomach much, but I felt like I sank too much when I attempted it; so it can be the reverse in a sense that there wasn’t any pressure to the point of sinkage. That, or I’m just not used to that position.

Edge Support — 4 out of 5

If you make full use of every inch of your mattress, you’d want to do it without falling off its edges. I found the DreamCloud’s stability to be quite good, but also noticed that it was better when lying down rather than when sitting on the edge, which might be attributed to the more even distribution of my weight when spread across a larger area than in 1 spot.

Motion Transfer — 5 out of 5

Having coils, I was a tad worried that my dog and I would be bouncing around the bed at every move we made throughout our sleep, disturbing the other. I was pleasantly impressed with how well the top layers padded and muffled our moves, even if my dog jumped on the bed while I was on it. My dog is a medium and weighs about 30 kg, so I’m not sure how this would translate to sharing a bed with another adult individual, but I’m pretty happy about this for my own needs.

Final Remarks and FAQ Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

It is utterly important to choose the right bed to make sure you’ll be safe from back pains and get good quality sleep. If you want to live a long and healthy life, sleep has got to be a priority. You’ve just read my reviews on each of the features of DreamCloud, and I’d say that all in all, it is definitely a reliable brand.

That sums up my experience with my 1st ever hybrid bed-in-a-box. Below are some FAQs for those of you with particular concerns.

Who would enjoy the DreamCloud?

I’m so satisfied with it, but like I specified: I mostly sleep on my back and side, and wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers. Those who often sleep hot will also enjoy the gel-infused memory foam. For those who are fond of the luxury feel of excellent hotel beds, this is a good alternative for its lavish Eurotop and memory materials that provide the feeling of being cradled in clouds. Back support is wonderful, and I haven’t had any pains to report.

How do I install the DreamCloud?

It is going to be delivered in a box, and is quite heavy; so unless you’re extremely strong, you will need some assistance. If you’ll be using a bed frame or foundation, place the vacuum-sealed mattress on it before you tear it open. You will not need box springs, but this fits most standard sizes; additionally, this can be used on any flat surface (even the floor). Because of the coils, be prepared for some snap when it escapes its own container. Allow up to 48 hours for it to completely reshape and adapt to its new area. That’s it!

What’s the price range?

Depending on the size, they range from $799 for a Twin up to $1,499 for a King or California King. If you are not in any hurry, you may want to wait for a promo, which they provide quite frequently on their website.

Is it a great investment? Blue Moon Fiber Arts DreamCloud

For me, it was definitely leaps and bounds better than my age-old mattress. I estimate I’d have at least a decade with this one, so that counts as a good investment in my book. Besides, for the luxury sleep it has provided me in the last couple of weeks, it has been more than worth the cost.
